How to: Visa run to Chongmek

If you have a tourist visa with multiple entries and you need to leave the country and re-start the visa with a new entry it is very easy to go from Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand to Chongmek, Laos.

From the buss station in Ubon (close to Big C) it is possible to take a minibuss to Chongmek for 100 bath. The ride takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes. When you get to Chongmek you have to depart from Thailand and get your passport stamped. Then you go to the Laos immigration office and apply for a Laos visa, this will cost 1400 bath. You will need a passport photo for the application. Then it is time to get around the corner of the building and pay an additional 50 bath to get your passport back. Unless you have something to do it Chongmek, now is a good time to go to another side of the same building and depart from Laos. Once the passport has a new stamp it is time to get back to the thai immigration office and get your passport stamped for your new entry.

And walk around the corner to get the visa

When we did the visa run we left from the buss station in Ubon at 10.00 and we were back in Ubon with the new visa at 14.15. The total cost of everything was 1650 bath (34 euro or 49 USD). An alternative would be to simply drive to Chongmek on motorbike, but the minibus was fast, convenient and cheap.

A Monday at Legacy

A normal Monday starts nice and early at 0600 when I drag myself out of bed and eat some breakfast. At 0630 the very convenient food-or-training bell rings and it is time to start the morning training. Morning training is muay thai and the session starts with running. It is up to you how far you run, but if you are up to it, a nice option is to run a lap around the Huai Wang Nong-lake located just outside the gym. A full lap around the lake is approximatively 8 km.

When the fighters get back from running it is time to start skipping. Following skipping it is time to wrap hands and do shadowboxing. Then comes rounds on the bags and pads with trainers. Each rounds is finished with push ups. At the end of the morning session comes 200 situps.

At 1030 the food-or-training bell rings and it is time for lunch.

At noon there is a grappling class with brown belt Eduardo.

At 1530 the food-or-training bells rings yet again and now it is time for the second muay thai class of the day. Monday afternoon of muay thai means that it is time for muay thai sparring.

After a hard days work it is time for the final call of the food-or-training bell for the day. It is now time for another buffet.

What is this?

This is a blog about training muay thai and mma at Legacy Gym in Ubon Ratchathani, located in north eastern Thailand. You can either read this to hear me brag about my crazy antics while i try to fight my way through southeast asia or as a guide to get world class fight training dirt cheap. I hope to shed some light on what training in Thailand has to offer and some tips on how to do it. I hope that this blog will be somewhat interactive, so if you have any questions about anything, feel free to make a comment or send me an email.

It would be hard for me to explain how I ended up here, but a couple of months ago I was back in Sweden where I´m from. At this time I was study chemistry as a masters student but I was kind of tried with it at the present time. Luckly for me, I had also been training jiu jitsu long enough to get me a purple belt, trained some mma, boxing and muay thai (without much apparent effect). Since it is more fun to fight than to write a thesis, I decided that buying a one-way ticket to Thailand in order to train and fight mma would be a splendid idea. I had previous done some longer training trips to Brasil and USA, but this time I found myself in the financial crisis without any money. The solution was to do distance studies in order to finance the training with the student loans. In order to make my (anything but) hard earned cash last a long way, I decided on going to Thailand to train. Anyhow, now I´m in Ubon without any regrets.
